Jake Golic Is Irish

Welcome to Notre Dame Jake Golic!!!

More on Jake and being the 1st commit for the 2009 class later, but until then, just roll around in the glory that is... The Golic Family.

UHND) – For the second year in a row, a Golic was the first to commit to Notre Dame and Charlie Weis. Last year it was Mike Jr, this year it is his brother Jake – a 6’5”, 220 lb tight end out of Connecticut. Jake now will join his brother and follow in his father, Mike Sr., and uncles’, Bob and Greg, footsteps.

It didn’t take long for Jake Golic to commit to Notre Dame once he had an offer from Weis. Weis extended the offer on Saturday and Golic accepted shortly after.

The reason the offer didn’t come sooner for Golic had to do with his grades so the junior tight end went to work in the classroom this past term. The results were a trip to the honor roll to go along with his second team All State honors on the football field.

Golic played some wide receiver this past year for Northwest High School, but his game translates to tight end on the college level. He doesn’t have the speed or explosiveness to play receiver at a Division 1 level, but he has the frame to bulk up and be a nice weapon from the tight end position.

If you check out the various recruiting websites, you’ll notice quite a few different weights listed for Golic, but he has recently said his weight is up towards the 220 lbs range. He also has a frame that could accommodate a lot more weight.

In 2007, Golic caught 21 passes for 410 yards with two scores for Northwest HS.

Notre Dame will have 4 scholarship tight ends on campus next year if Will Yeatmen is back with the team after serving a suspension this spring which means Golic could likely be the only tight end in this year’s class. Mike Ragone, Joseph Fauria, and Kyle Rudolph will all have at least two years of eligibility by the time Golic reports to Notre Dame.

This is a great first commitment for this year’s class – just as Mike Jr. was a year ago. Getting kids who absolutely want to be at Notre Dame is something that Weis has made an effort to do, and Golic certainly fits the bill.

Golic’s commitment also came at a great time for the Irish since they could use some momentum on the recruiting front this year.

At this time last year, the Irish had already secured verbal commitments from six different high school juniors – Mike Golic, John Goodman, Braxston Cave, Sean Cywnar, Kyle Rudolph, and David Posluszny. This year, however, the Irish sit at just one verbal commitment after Jake Golic’s pledge this weekend.
