Fine ladies of comedy in Vanity Fair

Jenna Fischer: This is one of those "I've arrived!" moments. Seriously. There's, like, little milestones... Like, being on David Letterman for the first time and then, like, being in Vanity Fair.
Chelsea Handler: ... I knew I arrived when I got my period.
Everyone: [groans and laughter]

Yeah, I know how most of our male readers are. They like their ladies funny, smart, and painfully out of their league. Well, start lurking around the magazine stands, boys, because the upcoming Vanity Fair has a new Annie Leibovitz photo spread featuring some of the funniest ladies on the scene. The impressive list boasts Sandra Bernhard, Susie Essman, Tina Fey, Jenna Fischer, Chelsea Handler, Leslie Mann, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Amy Sedaris, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, and Kristen Wiig, each of them doing very typical "Hollywood bad girl" things. I especially love Maya Rudolph's hair and how Silverman manages to do Amy Winehouse better than Amy Winehouse.

Everybody looks fantastic, all glammed up. It's interesting to think that a lot of these lovely comediennes came from backgrounds where they were made fun of for being goofy or dorky. I suggest you all start paying a little more attention to that frumpy girl in your Summer improv intensive. For more, check out this VanityFair.com behind-the-scenes video from the photo shoot. Sexy ladies cracking jokes! You know you love it.

By the way, I demand one of these for the men. A little bit of Steve Carell, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, John Mulaney, Simon Pegg, the Flight of the Conchords boys... I could go on, but you work it out with Leibovitz, Vanity Fair.

Robin Williams' wife files for divorce after nearly 19 years

Robin Williams and Marsha Garces Williams, married in April 1989, are splitting up. Garces Williams filed a divorce petition in San Francisco on March 21, seeking to end her marriage to Williams on the grounds of irreconcilable differences.

She is in her early 50s; he is 56. They married soon after Williams' divorce from Valerie Velardi, to whom he had been married for 10 years. Williams' and Garces' daughter, Zelda, was born in July of that year; their son, Cody, in 1991.

Williams and Garces met while she worked as a nanny for Zachary, born in 1983 to Williams and Velardi. Garces subsequently worked as personal assistant to the comedian. Four years after their marriage, in a New York Times interview, he said, "I don't need to go out to a club now and get a little bit of intimacy from 100 or 200 people. Now I can get that talking to friends around the table."

Over the years, as their family grew, Williams and Garces worked together, both professionally and toward values they shared. In 1991, they founded Blue Wolf Productions; Garces produced "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Patch Adams," "Jakob the Liar" and "Robin Williams Live on Broadway."

Together they also created the Windfall Foundation, a non-profit that focuses on education, health, the environment and the arts. Garces has particularly been involved with Doctors Without Borders and Seacology; Williams with the Christopher Reeve Foundation (he was Reeve's classmate at Juilliard) and Comic Relief. Their house, in Sea Cliff, was the site of a variety of big-ticket fundraising dinners and cocktail parties, but also Halloween central for neighborhood trick-or-treaters.

Williams has done two publicly acknowledged stints in rehab: for drugs in the '80s and, after staying sober for 20 years, for alcohol in 2006. The couple was out and about at various events upon his return, and in the past year, he has delighted Bay Area audiences by dropping in unannounced for surprise appearances at comedy events and clubs.

Garces was not at Williams' side when he was honored by the San Francisco International Film Festival last spring, and amid reports of many sightings in Marin County, where he was said to have been living, rumors of problems have been rife for months.

Garces' lawyer, Robert Kaufman of Beverly Hills, would provide no information.

New episode of "South Park," entitled, "Major Boobage

The boys are worried when Kenny starts experimenting with the newest way to get high in an all-new episode of "South Park," entitled, "Major Boobage," premiering on Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Comedy Central.

Kenny is skipping school and the other boys are sure it's because he's hooked on the latest drug craze that's popular with the junior high and under crowd. Meanwhile, Kyle's parents become concerned that their son is getting high when they find contraband in his room. To illustrate just how high you can go, "South Park" pays homage to the 1981 movie, "Heavy Metal."

Launched in 1997, "South Park," now in its 12th season, remains the highest-rated series on Comedy Central. "South Park" repeats Wednesdays at 12:00 a.m., Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. and Sundays at 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with Sam Raimi to spearhead a franchise revival of Jack Ryan, the Tom Clancy-created CIA analyst character who drove four hit movies for the studio.

The intention is to generate several films Raimi would develop and direct, featuring Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted. One invention the studio is considering is to set the film in the present, with the action triggered by a global threat.

Par will draft a scribe to write a Ryan movie that Raimi would shoot after he completes the Universal horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Paramount wants the Ryan movie ready for release in summer 2010.

Ryan is the cerebral CIA analyst who climbed the political ladder and became an Everyman action hero star in a quartet of films spearheaded by producer Mace Neufeld. Alec Baldwin originated Ryan in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October" and when Baldwin famously jumped ship to do "A Streetcar Named Desire" on Broadway, Harrison Ford replaced him in 1992's "Patriot Games" and 1994's "Clear and Present Danger." Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears." The four films grossed $781.5 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be released in two parts. The announcement was made by Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Robinov also announced that director David Yates, who earlier helmed the 2007 summer blockbuster “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and is currently in production on “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” will direct “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” This marks the first time any one director will helm more than two releases in the Harry Potter film franchise.

In addition, David Heyman, who first brought the project to Warner Bros. in 1997, will be completing the film franchise as the producer of all of the Harry Potter films. David Barron will also continue as producer. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” will be adapted by screenwriter Steve Kloves.

In making the announcement, Robinov stated, “It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.”

“This is a very special moment for us, as it is the final episode in the great journey that J.K. Rowling undertook more than a decade ago,” said Alan Horn, President and COO, Warner Bros. Entertainment. “It has been a journey for all of us at Warner Bros. as well, and we are confident that our filmmakers will finish our series of films as a fitting complement to Jo’s completion of Harry’s story on the page.”

South Park: Major Boobage

S12E03) To begin, for those unaware, South Park Studios has started to offer full episodes of the show on their official site with limited commercial interruption. I originally reported this in November.

I'll say this: when the South Park team put their minds to it, they can come up with some fantastic animation. When you watch the crudity of the animation in standard episodes, it's easy to forget that they're pretty damn talented at their craft.
This episode was all over the place. There were the references to the movie Heavy Metal, of course. There was the after-school special theme and the nod to The Diary of Anne Frank. And, of course, at the end was the reference to the Eliot Spitzer scandal. All bits were individually funny but they seemed haphazardly put together like pieces from different puzzles.

I really dug the music of the Heavy Metal animations. It made me want to watch the original movie again. They really captured the essence of the movie: an acid trip with bright colors, psychedelic imagery and lots of tits.

My favorite phrases were "the Breastiary in Nippopolis" and the "Itty Titty Fairies of Mammary Mountain".

Let's face it, the boobs were everywhere. On buildings, on people, on weapons, on vehicles. Hell, they were even on the women. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time the series has shown a naked animated female ass (one that was well drawn to boot).

This episode was also the first time in a while that Kenny was the featured kid of the episode. It got to the point where I was wondering if he even existed anymore. I do find it kind of disturbing that the South Park kids are supposed to be about 10 years old and despite this Kenny is something of a pervert.

The paranoid, fear mongering nature of the Fox News broadcast captured the style of the network perfectly in my opinion. It is also very much like South Park to use something as harmless as cats as an analogy for addiction. I laughed when Gerald Broflovski brought out the cat in the cellophane bag.

The Holocaust analogy and irony of Cartman saving the cats was a theme that was somewhat hammered into the audience, particularly at the end. Naturally, the lesson was lost on him. But if he could learn and grow, he wouldn't be Cartman. It may just be that Cartman likes cats more than people.

For someone who hasn't snorted cat pee in ten years, Mr. Broflovski sure kept a lot of the equipment in his basement. I'm wondering how such an overbearing woman as his wife didn't notice it earlier. Perhaps she was just too absorbed in keeping the children safe.

I thought the show had a good premise but lacked in the execution. The season feels like the creators are losing their steam. Granted, it's tough to top Imaginationland. However, I find that even the mediocre episodes of South Park have more genuine laughs and more heart than the majority of the shows out there.

Bayless returning? Brandon Jennings thinks so

A blog is an opinion based entity, I do not pretend to have a ‘breaking news’ type of site. Rather, this is a place to voice opinions about the news going on around recruiting which other sites more effectively compile and report.

I will preface this by saying that I, personally, did not hear the bit of commentary about Jerryd Bayless’ future in Arizona. However, there is enough chatter from people that were able to catch Brandon Jennings’ 12 point, 9 assist performance at the McDonald’s All-American game to warrant notice.

Apparently early on in the game, the announcers dropped the commentary saying that Bayless had phoned Jennings and told him that he would be returning to the University of Arizona for his sophomore year.

There is not any history with Bayless telling too many lies – or facts for that matter – as he is only a freshman, however, the source must have been strong enough to drop that fact on a nationally watched broadcast.

So fair warning to take this ‘news’ with a gigantic grain of sand. That being said, what once seemed like a far-fetched dream for Arizona fans (Bayless returning) at least looks like it is a distinct possibility for now.

Rutgers recruit Speed powers West's win in McDonald's All-American

MILWAUKEE -- You knew this was coming. There is no doubting it anymore.

Speed kills.

Nikki Speed, the most aptly named high school player in the country, kills in many ways. With her speed, of course. With her shooting and passing, no doubt. And now with her sense of timing, an essential quality for any point guard -- in this case, the one destined to run Rutgers for the next four years.

[+] EnlargeGlenn Nelson

Rutgers recruit and co-MVP Nikki Speed used her passing skills to power the West in the girls McDonald's All-American Game.

Just like a point guard, Speed anticipated her SportsCenter moment. She expected the usual, prehalftime lull in the McDonald's All-American Game for girls and, sure enough, it came. Seeking to fill the gaping hole in the atmosphere at the Bradley Center, the 5-foot-9 blur kicked into overdrive to haul in a long pass, spied future Scarlet Knight teammate Brooklyn Pope on her left, went airborne, spun some 60 degrees and tossed a no-look, seeing-eye laser beam to Pope for a bring-down-the-house layup with 1:06 left in the first half of the West's 80-64 victory over the East.

"Usually about that time, the crowd gets a little dead," said Speed, who hails from Marlborough (Calif.) High School. "I wanted to get everybody back into it -- the fans, my teammates, everyone."

Mission accomplished -- for Pope, most of all. Coming off an embarrassing, zero-point performance during Monday's Three-Point Shootout, she used the new day and atmosphere for redemption, leading the West with 13 points on, besides blind passes from Speed, an assortment of spinning, pump-faking layups and jump hooks against the much taller East. Afterward, the 5-11 forward and the 5-9 guard were named co-MVPs of the game.

Good Knights indeed.

"It gave me great motivation," Pope said of taking a goose egg in the shootout. "I got it all night [from the other girls]. I'm glad they didn't show it on ESPN. Thank you very much."

Thanks also is due Speed, who advised her teammates all week "to run and I'll find you," as well as West coach Tim Flawiter of Parker High in Janesville, Wis., who emphasized his team's need to counter its high disadvantage with its advantage in RPMs.

[+] EnlargeGlenn Nelson

Brooklyn Pope led the West with 13 points, many on passes from soon-to-be college teammate and fellow co-MVP Speed.
"The coaches said run, run, run," said Pope, a senior at Dunbar (Texas) High School, "so we ran, ran, ran."

Pope also had paid attention to Speed's admonitions. Again playing the floor-general role, Speed already has picked up on the need to call out Pope's name to warn her of incoming passes. It wasn't necessary on their very immaculate reception, however.

"All I did was keep running the floor," Pope said. "I knew she would throw the pass."

As Pope mentioned, the West ran, ran, ran all night. It ran on makes and misses alike, on its 42 defensive rebounds and Ashley Gayle's six blocks. It ran up a a 13-point lead, on Shootout queen Ashley Corral's 3-pointer midway through the first half and it ran up a 21-point lead in the second.

Except for spurts by Tennessee-bound Shekinna Stricklen, who had a game-high 17 points, and Connecticut-bound Elena Delle Donne, who had 10, the East shot poorly after shooting lights out during a tune-up scrimmage between the two squads a day earlier.

"It's like we used up all our makes during that scrimmage," Delle Donne said.

The typically reserved Speed had plenty more to give, approaching the showcase almost with uncharacteristic animation. That translated right off the bat into a perfect bounce pass to Nneka Ogwumike on the dead run. The early exhibition of timing provided Speed a foundation.

"Building confidence," Speed said. "That's what that was. Every pass was more confidence to build on. Getting everyone off, that's what it was all about."

It was a revealing week for Speed. She learned things about Pope, whom she's played against for years, and Jasmine Dixon of Long Beach, with whom she's played since grade school. She also met for the first time her other future Rutgers teammates, April Sykes of Crawford, Miss., and Chelsey Lee of Miami, Fla., with whom she's only texted, sometimes by accident on the receiving end at 3 in the morning. She said she started to learn how to defend Delle Donne, who will be a rival in the Big East.

Speed also contained her longtime bugaboo, turnovers, and learned more about timing.

With five minutes remaining and the West clinging to the lead against a hard-charging East, Speed motioned to West teammate Destini Hughes, the Fort Worth, Texas, guard headed to LSU.

"Let's go," Speed said. "Five minutes."

"Destini," she said, ensuring she had Hughes' attention.

"Yeah," Hughes said. "I got your back."

In the end, they all did.

Penning Coral Sea Scrolls

I'M going to write another book. I've been thinking about it very seriously.

Well, almost very seriously . . . close to seriously . . . OK, a fleeting thought. My last effort, which made JK steam-Rowling's literary acrobatics look like a bachelor's shopping list, made $8000 for local charities and is in libraries all over the world. Fair dinkum, libraries from the Aitkenvale Library to, to, to . . . um . . . well the wheelie bin out the back. There's even one in the Louvre! Ok, I misread it, the loo at my place. I'm running quickly out of funds as I sponsor smaller charities which are often overlooked, but are just as important. Like a wheel-a-thon at St Joey's for a school's Chinese garden and more, even a couple of doggies from Delta Dogs (I owe you for this year fellas, so bark at your master and come and pick it up). Probably end up as the Coral Sea Scrolls. It may be a book on tropical hints like strips of cloth dipped in the sports fix-ya-back stuff `Deep Heat' to ward off fruit bats, or Bay leaves in the cupboards for cockroaches or Pricey's Bully page for the bottom of the cockatiels cage . . . NOT YET, I'm Not Finished. So any uniquely tropical life saving ideas, let me know. And I'm not sure about the Bay leaves unless the `cookroaches' are making casseroles.

1RAR anniversary
WELL done to Bruce Harmer and the Salvos for the wonderful Easter service on Castle Hill. Some of my hill walker mates were there and said it was the most spiritual they'd been to. And the army Sally Man was there too. Good stuff. Speaking of the army, the 15th anniversary of Operation Solace is coming up for the Big Blue one, 1RAR. It's on April 3-5 and any ex-1RAR digger that would like to join the party, send an email. Hang on, with the cutbacks, how's your morse code? (4771 1416).

Is Nibbles a he?
HAVE a look at Nibbles the dinosaur. Now I know it was in the paper recently but he's worth another mention. I wonder if he is a he? Or is he a she? Well if it's hard to tell, no wonder the poor things are extinct. In some ways that's good, imagine the headlights hitting this as you drove through Brandon. Not too good for the bull bar, in fact the Sunlander would come out second best. Let's hope no vandals hurt poor Nibbles. The amount of `creation' work that the great team at MTQ, Phillip and his Dino-sawers have done is fantastic.

Fingerling lesson
G'DAY to the kids from Bowen State High who now have 400 barra fingerlings to look after, thanks to the Bowen Fishing Classic. One of the kids called to tell me that the fingerlings are being well looked after, and will soon be leglings. Soon after that, tummylings.

Heavenly hour
EARTH hour coming up tomorrow, where we turn off our lights for an hour. It's to help with global warming, as in cool it down, not warm it up, I think. Otherwise the Sunferries skippers will be on the lookout for bits of Antarctica. It's a great idea, like my Star Night of last year _ same thought, but mine was only to see the stars. One to save the world, the other simply to star gaze. Imagine if all lights could be switched off for 15 minutes, all those stars and heavenly bodies. `Heavenly bodies?' Oh beam me up, Scotty.

Copping it sweet
YOU can't take compliments without coppin' a bit the other way, and I've certainly done that over the last few days in our letters to the editor section. A wonderful forum for your thoughts, and we in the media love it, even if we cop a serve. That's what its all about. Thank you Lesley and Tracey, we will certainly try harder. I get a little hurt, that's just me, but as my special friend said, one or two swallows arriving doesn't mean its summer. One or two green frogs doesn't mean the Wet, or one or two green ants doesn't mean a bitten bum, or one or two politicians doesn't mean an election, or one or two kisses doesn't mean . . . might leave it there. You can never please everybody. No wonder I couldn't be a politician. A day without laughter is a day wasted. Love us or otherwise. Happy days!

Saul Williams creeps up into the mainstream with latest release

Saul Williams is a gem in a genre that has had its fair share of criticism for using tired, overused formulas to create songs. Instead of ascribing to the common themes in popular hip-hop, such as ultra-masculinity, braggadocios meanderings or the recently popular so-called "conscious" lyrics (Kanye West, anyone?) in order to sell records, Saul Williams just goes out there and creates. In fact, due to the diversity of his work, it would be presumptuous to place him in any particular musical category. He is just an artist, in a very pure and exciting sense.

While listening to Saul's music (or watching him perform his spoken word pieces), one gets the sense that he is expressing something genuine. There exists no boundaries in his music, nor is he even constricted by the medium of music at all - he is also an actor and published poet.

His most recent album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!, further establishes Williams as an interesting and genre-defying artist. The album was produced by Trent Reznor, leader of industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails. As far as content, Williams' moves through a plethora of ideas that may leave the unambitious or unprepared listener overwhelmed, and perhaps scared.

Williams based most of the lyrics for the 15 tracks (excluding the cover of U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday") on his 2006 book, The Dead Emcee Scrolls: The Lost Teachings of Hip-Hop. In addition, the album title is a reference to David Bowie's 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. How cool is that? Throughout the album, Williams ostensibly raps, speaks and sings under the pseudonym of NiggyTardust.

Saul Williams has surprised the world and solidified himself as a musician for the sake of creating and expression, rather than for the sake of accumulating cash. Firstly, it should be noted that although Williams is certainly well-respected, he is not as well-known. His second album brought in approximately $30,000, which is respectable but by no means mainstream. However, Saul seems content with this. Indeed, The Rise and Fall of NiggyTardust, similar to Radiohead's In Rainbows, was released online for free or a $5 donation to the artist (the album was no longer free after 100,000 downloads). The difference between Williams and Radiohead, though, is important to consider. Namely, Radiohead is one of the biggest bands and would have made money regardless of how they sold their album. The same cannot be said for Saul Williams.

Williams' latest disc will leave even the most pompous of hip-hop lovers, music critics and literary geeks scrambling to decode the lyrics and instrumentals. Williams' blend of precocious content, lyricism and instrumentals makes for an interesting and exciting album. The Rise and Fall of NiggyTardust is a breath of fresh air. I recommend this album for anyone who desires something new. And, at $5 a pop, it is certainly cheaper than a bottle of whiskey, a roll of quarters and a list of promiscuous late-night phone numbers (Side note: The Strand apologizes if such activities are not new to you).

Kimberly Locke catches "Idol" fans up on her busy career

Kimberly Locke returned to her old stomping grounds at "American Idol" on Wednesday night with a cute little video montage and a live performance of her song "Fall" from her second solo album.

Locke finished third place on Season Two of "Idol" behind winner Ruben Studdard and first runner-up Clay Aiken.

In her video montage, Kimberly showed us what all she has been up to including the production of two albums and the opening of a restaurant in New York City called Croton Falls.

Ms. Locke looked lovely saying she had just lost more weight in addition to the pounds she dropped on Vh-1's "Celebrity Fit Club."

Pizza topper

By Mark Henderson
THE manager of a local fast food store has again been crowned her firm's quickest pizza-maker in Scotland.
Cat Mein beat off competition from eight other Domino's employees at the Scottish heat of the world contest in Livingston.

The reigning champion retained her title by creating three pizzas in one minute 30 seconds, cutting three seconds off her own record set last year.

She will now head to Wales next month for the UK heat, where she will face the top pizza-makers from across the country.

Cat, who runs the Falkirk branch of Domino's Pizza, said: "I am so excited to be crowned Scottish champion. I've been practising really hard – making the perfect pizza is not as easy as it sounds.

''You have to learn to stretch the dough into the perfect crust and base, which takes a lot of practice.

''At the competition you are judged on speed, stretching, saucing, cheesing and toppings.''

She added: "I can't wait to head to Wales for the final. For the last four years, the UK winner has also been the fastest in Europe. I'd love to carry that accolade into a fifth year. Until then I'll be practising night and day."

Simon Judge, franchisee consultant and a member of the judging panel, said: "It was a nail-biting final, but Cat won it hands down.

"The skill and stamina required to slap and stretch the dough and perfectly sauce, cheese and top three perfect pizzas in less than two minutes is not easy, but she kept her cool and is well deserving of the title.

"The UK final is going to be thrilling – Cat will certainly take some beating."

So what is the secret behind Cat's astonishing success?

"It's just lots and lots of practice," she said. ''In Domino's I was making 100 pizzas an hour, for four hours and for three years, so you just become faster."

And Cat (26), who has worked for the pizza chain for five years, revealed that she was not the only speedy pizza maker in the Falkirk franchise.

She added: ''I really love working in Falkirk – all the staff are really nice. There was also someone else from the shop who competed in the final and came in fourth – so if you want a fast pizza, Falkirk is the place to go!"

Pregnant' man stuns medical profession

A man who used to be a woman is five months pregnant, according to an article he has written for an American magazine that features a picture of him at 22 weeks, with facial hair and a man’s flat chest above his swollen stomach.

My Telegraph: Transgender males and motherhood
How about that: More tales of the bizarre
Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman, describes himself as a “transgender male” in the piece which says his decision to have a child “has been met with discrimination and outright derision by health care professionals”.

advertisement
The article, entitled Labour of Love, appears in the most recent issue of The Advocate, a Los Angeles-based magazine with a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender readership.

According to the piece, Mr Beatie went through a sex change but decided to have only chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy, stopping short of making any changes to the reproductive organs he was born with.

Mr Beatie is legally male and lives with his wife, Nancy, in Bend, Oregon.

The couple, who have been together 10 years, wanted to have children.

Mrs Beatie, however, was unable to conceive, having suffered severe endometriosis and undergone a hysterectomy, her husband writes.

So the couple decided Mr Beatie should try to carry a baby.

He stopped the hormone injections and his periods returned, he writes.

After a year - and nine doctors - he was able to get pregnant using frozen donor sperm but the pregnancy was eptopic and required surgery.

But a second pregnancy was a success and the couple's daughter is due on July 3, the article states.

Mr Beatie describes the process as a challenge, listing the difficulties they encountered en route, including hostility from doctors to a situation that “sparks legal, political and social unknowns”.

The first doctor they approached “told me to shave my facial hair”, Mr Beatie writes.

Others turned them away.

“Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender”.

“How does it feel to be a pregnant man?” he writes in the article.

“Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am. In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate, though my gender identity as male is constant. To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child. “I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.”

In the article, Mr Beatie says that to neighbours in “our quiet Oregon community”, he and his wife “are viewed just as we are - a happy couple deeply in love.”

Canada’s National Post said an editorial assistant with The Advocate confirmed it had verified the pregnancy with Mr Beatie’s gynaecologist. She added that the photograph of the pregnant man was Mr Beatie.

The couple, however, refused to give the Post further details, citing deals with American media outlets. “It’s a big deal and we want to be able to tell our story,” the Post reported Mrs Beatie as saying.

“We’d love everybody on board as long as they’re understanding and are going to tell our story and not their own.”

Neal Broverman, associate editor of The Advocate, confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that in addition to talking to Mr Beatie and seeing the picture of him pregnant, the magazine had spoken to his doctor to confirm he was indeed expecting.

dancing with the stars results

The first two stars to be eliminated from the 6 Season of Dancing With The Stars show were Penn Jillette and Monica Seles.

Penn added a dash of magic to his quickstep, but his footwork failed to impress the judges.

Judge Bruno Tonioli said to Monica that “You’re not a performer, and it’s hard for you.” And called her “a legend. Somebody of your stature being here with us really is a privilege, and you threw yourself (in) at the deep end.”

The remaining competitors include Adam Carolla, Jason Taylor, Kristi Yamaguchi, Mario, Steve Guttenberg, Shannon Elizabeth, Christian de la Fuente, Marlee Matlin, Priscilla Presley and Marissa Jaret Winokur.

Each will perform the tango or jive on next week’s show.

D.B. Cooper's Parachute Possibly Found

The FBI is analyzing a torn, tangled parachute found buried by children in southwest Washington to determine whether it might have been used by famed plane hijacker D.B. Cooper, the agency said.

Children playing outside their home near Amboy found the chute's fabric sticking up from the ground in an area where their father had been grading a road, agent Larry Carr said Tuesday. They pulled it out as far as they could, then cut the parachute's ropes with scissors.

The children had seen recent media coverage of the case — the FBI launched a publicity campaign last fall, hoping to generate tips to solve the 36-year-old mystery — and they urged their dad to call the agency.

"When we went to the public, the whole idea was that the public is going to bring the answers to us," Carr said. "This is exactly what we were hoping for."

A man identifying himself as Dan Cooper — later mistakenly but enduringly identified as D.B. Cooper — hijacked a Northwest Orient flight from Portland, Ore., to Seattle in November 1971, claiming he had a bomb.

When the plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, he released the passengers in exchange for $200,000 and asked to be flown to Mexico. He apparently parachuted from the plane's back stairs somewhere near the Oregon border.

Agents doubt he survived because conditions were poor and the terrain was rough, but few signs of his fate have been found.

Carr spoke with the children's father, whom he declined to identify, early this month and learned the chute was white, the same color as Cooper's.

And when Carr overlaid the family's address onto a map investigators made in the early days of the investigation, he learned another encouraging fact: They lived right in Cooper's most probable landing zone, between Green and Bald mountains.

Carr hopped in his car and drove down. He dug around the property for about 45 minutes, unsuccessfully looking for a harness or other remains from the parachute, but the children weren't home, and the father wasn't sure exactly where they found it.

There are no obvious markings on the parachute to indicate whether it's the type Cooper used, a Navy Backpack 6 with a 26-foot canopy, Carr said. He's hoping a member of the public who has expertise in the parachutes will come forward and confirm whether it's the right kind before the FBI bothers to excavate the property. Barring that, the agency could turn to scientific analysis of the fabric.

"We've got to be pretty darn sure we're not wasting time and money here," he said.

If it is Cooper's parachute, that will solve one mystery — where he apparently landed — but it will raise another, Carr said.

In 1980, a family on a picnic found $5,880 of Cooper's money in a bag on a Columbia River beach, near Vancouver. Some investigators believed it might have been washed down to the beach by the Washougal River. But if Cooper landed near Amboy and stashed the money bag there, there's no way it could have naturally reached the Washougal.

"If this is D.B. Cooper's parachute, the money could not have arrived at its discovery location by natural means," Carr said. "That whole theory is out the window."

March 25 American Idol: David Cook Sings “Billie Jean

Tonight the American Idol kids had to perform songs from the year they were born. Warning: This will make you feel very, very old.

Born in 1987, Ramiele Malubay chooses the ambitious song "Alone" by Heart. And the poor thing belts it out off-key. Randy Jackson calls it like it is: off key. But of course, Paula Abdul softens the blow by calling Ramiele "brave" for performing while she was sick. Jason Castro is also a 1987 baby. He says he's been told he's an Aries and says how weird the word "Aries" is. Jason performs Sting's "Fragile" while also playing the guitar.

Simon Cowell says, "I think it's time for you to start taking this seriously" and compares Castro's performance to someone busking outside the subway station. "You're not going to win if you keep doing that week after week."

Another 1987 baby is Syesha Mercado who sings "If I Were Your Woman."

Randy says, "This is the best I have ever heard you sing, including when you auditioned. It was stellar; it was unbelievable. I am shocked."

Paula says this is going to be the moment that everyone remembers as when "Syesha flipped it" and became the dark horse who is going to sail on through.

Oh Brooke White. You're so damn happy. The Beat hates that. She tells us about what a child prodigy she was. The Beat also hates child prodigies. Show offs. Born in 1983, Brooke sings "Every Step You Take" by the Police and damnit, it's pretty good (sigh).

Randy says he liked the first part, but he didn't love the arrangement toward the middle or end. Simon agrees with Randy, especially about the band joining in toward the end, which he says made it sound old-fashioned.

Michael Johns takes on two Queen classics. "We Will Rock You," and after a couple of lines, "We Are the Champions."

Simon says, "Michael, this is the first time with you that I've seen star potential. Tonight you just got it right. … For me, it's the only memorable performance of the night so far."

Carly Smithson sings "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Although we at The Beat prefer this version, she does an okay job, but is panned by Randy.

Poor adorable favorite to win David Archuleta performs 1990's song "You're the Voice," a choice that confuses the judges. His stage dad cheers from the audience. Kristy Lee Cook sang oh… God… no she didn't. Yes she did. "God Bless the USA." Gah! Yes. If you're wondering, she still sucks. The weird thing is Simon says she's "brilliant." No word on whether she blew Simon out of his socks to earn that critique.

Hmmm… let's see… did we miss any one? Oh yeah, Chikezie was born in 1985, and he sings "If Only for One Night." Randy doesn't "vibe" it.

Finally, born in 1982 David Cook sings "Billie Jean." It's a really weird but cool rendition. Kinda moody and dark. It's awesome. Randy calls him the most original, most bold contestant ever.

Simon adds, "David, that was brave. It could have either been insane or amazing, and I have to tell you, it was amazing."

American Idol': Top 10 perform

« 'Dancing With the Stars': week two | Main | 'Dancing With the Stars': Two stars are sent home »

'American Idol': Top 10 perform
On tonight's American Idol, the Top 10 take to the stage to take on songs from "The Year They Were Born."

Well, I guess we're getting a little closer to modern songs. Kind of. I guess, really, it's mostly just 1980s night again.

Ramiele Malubay is up first. She was born in 1987, and her song is "Alone" by Heart. It is, of course, a huge song, but she belts it out and reminds us of the big voice that got her this far to start with. Judge Randy Jackson mentions that she's under the weather, but that regardless, it wasn't the right choice as far as he is concerned. Judge Paula Abdul says, "I give you a tremendous amount of credit and brave [sic]" for going through with it despite being sick. Judge Simon Cowell says, "I don't think it was as bad as Randy said. I thought the first part of the song was OK." He adds that if she survived on last week's "appalling" performance, she will be fine with this one.

Jason Castro was also born in 1987, and he chooses Sting's "Fragile." He's back with the guitar and looking a lot more comfortable. It's a lovely song, and he does well with it, but it's not a huge departure or anything. Randy says it was a very good choice of song, though he didn't do anything new with it, but still: "It was nice." Paula says he's staying true to who he is and his niche, but there wasn't a big wow factor. Simon says he's had two bad weeks, "and I think it's time for you to start taking this seriously." He compares it to someone busking outside the subway station. "You're not going to win if you keep doing that week after week."

Syesha Mercado is another 1987 baby. She sings "If I Were Your Woman." Except she sings it "If I was your woman ..." at the beginning (sorry, subjunctive!), but she goes back to "were" halfway through. (Hmm, upon doing a little research, it appears that Alicia Keys might have ditched the subjunctive on this song first. But enough about the grammar.) I think this is one of Syesha's best performances, especially lately. Randy says, "This is the best I have ever heard you sing, including when you auditioned. It was stellar, it was unbelievable. I am shocked." Paula says this is going to be the moment that everyone remembers as when "Syesha flipped it" and became a contender. Simon agrees that it was the best so far, but he thinks she was reaching her limit toward the end of the song.

Chikezie was born in 1985, and he sings "If Only for One Night." He tells Ryan beforehand that he was scared off of ballads for a while after getting ripped by the judges a couple of weeks ago, but he decided to follow his heart this week and sing something that was important to him. His voice sounds pretty good, especially after he warms up a bit, but for some reason the performance still doesn't do much for me. Randy says this came from a "very old-school" place and that he didn't love it. He missed the vibe and energy from some of Chikezie's other performances. Paula says he's a throwback, but "a good throwback." "I think that you did a great job." Simon says, "I think you sang it well. Having said that, the performance was actually very cheesy." After silencing the "wrap-it-up" music, Simon adds that he didn't see any originality.

Brooke White is a 1983 baby, and her song is "Every Breath You Take." Like Jason, she's decided to go back to her instrument, so she's behind the piano. She starts the first couple of words, then stops and starts again from the beginning. Once she starts, though, she's pretty good, though she starts rushing it toward the end. (I almost hate to bring this up, but doesn't her left hand look really odd? It looks pruney, like she was in the bath for too long, or like maybe she has a glove on or something? I've never noticed it before, and I'm a little perplexed.) Randy says he liked the first part, but he didn't love the arrangement toward the middle or end. Paula: "I enjoyed this performance so much more than last week's." She says Brooke has her own niche and her own voice, and she appreciates her consistency. Simon agrees with Randy, especially about the band joining in toward the end, which he says made it sound old-fashioned. Still, he says, she will be fine and through to next week.

Michael Johns is the first non-1980s person of the night -- he was born in 1978. He's taking on "two Queen classics." In 90 seconds? The first one is "We Will Rock You," and after a couple of lines, he launches into "We Are the Champions." I think he was right to go back to Queen (which he did so memorably in Hollywood week). This was his best in a while (as evidenced by the audience going crazy). Randy: "That was the best performance for me since you've been on this show." Paula says this was his moment, "and I'm so proud of you." Simon: "Michael, this is the first time with you that I've seen star potential. You just got it right. ... For me, it's the only memorable performance of the night so far."

Carly Smithson was born in 1983, and she's taking on "Total Eclipse of the Heart." I think she made the right choice with this song -- it really suits her range -- but the wrong choice with her final note(s). Randy says it was an interesting song choice, and that he didn't love the note at the end. "I don't like the whole rock thing," he adds. Paula thinks he's crazy and says Carly could take any song Paula didn't really like and make her a believer. But then I think Paula's crazy because she gives Carly credit for that last awful note. "That run at the end was not in tune, Paula," Randy rightly points out. Simon says that something didn't quite work. He says she seemed uptight and tense, which prevented him from enjoying the performance.

David Archuleta was born in 1990 (I am so old), and he's going to sing "You're the Voice," which I am pretty sure I've never heard before. (But hey, 1990 had some rough choices: Imagine if he'd gone with something off of 1990's Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em.) It's a big song and suits his big voice, though the song itself is fairly cheesy and doesn't feel too modern even though it's the newest song we'll be hearing tonight. Randy says it was a strange song choice, "but if you can sing, you can sing whatever." Paula says she was also confused by the song choice, but that he "could sing the phone book." Simon says he sang it well in parts, but, "I actually didn't like the performance at all. I thought it was reminiscent of a theme-park performance. It was one of those ghastly songs you sing with animated characters around you, and everyone joins in."

Kristy Lee Cook was born in 1984, and she is going to sing "God Bless the U.S.A." Are you kidding me? Come ON. Is this a "ghastly" Fourth of July parade in some small town? I take back what I said about David's song being cheesy. This is the cheesiest song in the history of the known universe. I can scarcely bring myself to critique her performance, but, uh, her last note was nice. Randy says it was "a great song choice, I love that song." He thought it was a great performance. Paula says she has heard better performances from her, but her voice is getting stronger. Simon says this was her best performance by a mile. "That was the most clever song choice I have heard in years. ... That's going to keep you in the competition." I have had a lot of Twilight Zone moments recapping this show, but this one might take the cake.

David Cook is a 1982 baby, and he is going to sing "Billie Jean." Yes, that one. But not in a Michael Jackson-ish way at all; it's a rock-ballad take on the song. His voice sounds good, but it's a little weird to me. He's definitely making it his own, but it doesn't seem to have much in common with the original. No one seems to mind that much, though. Randy calls him the most original, most bold contestant ever, and adds that with that performance, he might win the whole thing. Paula says he's brilliant, and she thinks he can win this. Simon: "David, that was brave. It could have either been insane or amazing, and I have to tell you, it was amazing." He's very happy with that, as you would imagine.

Who's in danger? Who's got it made? Who made you go, "Huh?" (Or was that just me?)

Total Eclipse of the Heart

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART (Bonnie Tyler )

Turnaround, every now and then I get a
little bit lonely and you're never coming around
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit angry and I know I've got to get out and cry
Turnaround, Every now and then I get a
little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you'll never be the boy you always you wanted to be
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there's no one in the universe as magical and wonderous as you
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there's nothing any better and there's nothing I just wouldn't do
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight

god bless the USA my keep kristy lee cook in American Idol

Kristy Lee Cook's rendition of “God Bless the USA” may spare her from getting voted out this week; “that was the most clever song choice I’ve ever heard.” Simon said.

So Kristy Lee may be safe...well, that was a hard one to predict. She's been in the bottom three vote getters for weeks and she's got the worst odds to win American Idol, 75 to 1. Is there more to say about her?

Yes, there is. She was smart in choosing “God Bless the USA” and she got all the judges to say it was one of her best performances. I think this should be more than enough to keep her in for at least another week.

Double start aside Brooke White did well with her rendition of “Every Breath You Take.” although the second part of the song, when the band kicked in, was definitely not as good as the first. She shouldn't have any problem this week.

David Archuleta....what to say about him...well, I believe he won't make it to the Top 3 nor he'll win American Idol. Yes, everybody says he's the frontrunner but let’s be reasonable: he is simply not sellable. He could win but end up in a commercial disaster like Jordin Sparks. He’s good but too young and lacks personality.

I think winning the Idol could end up being more negative than positive for Archuleta....enjoy it while it lasts David, you won't see the end of it.

The "Aussie" was at his best last night. Michael Johns rendition of “We Will Rock You” was simply awesome, last night's best performance in our humble opinion. He's absolutely in, no worries.

Syesha Mercado was easily second best after Johns with her rendition of “If I was Your Woman”, a song simply perfect for her.

Chikezie's “If Only for One Night”...what to say? Well, I guess Simon said it all. "Sang it well, performance cheesy, nothing original.” Boring, I'd add. I see him in the bottom three vote getters.

Jason Castro's rendition of "Fragile" was totally anonymous. "It's time you take this seriously." Simon told him. He's a candidate for the bottom 3, I may add.

David Cook rendition of “Billy Jean” was simply awesome. Believe me or not I went and bet $50 on his odds to win after his performance. At 3 to 1 he is still a very good buy.

Ramiele Malubay...well, I see her as the least vote getter this week. True she's been sick but her rendition of “Alone” was a total disaster. Pity for being sick is the only hope she has to hang on for another week, but I doubt it.

Carly Smithson is my favourite. Her rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was simply powerful, a very strong performance although Simon may be right; Carly can do better. She deserves to stay in the race, although she could end up among the bottom 3 vote getters once again.
